Its name: The city is named after the Mexía family. In 1833, the state of Coahuila and Texas granted General José Antonio Mexía's children (Enrique and Adelaida) large land tracts in Limestone, Freestone, and Anderson counties. When the Houston and Texas Central Railway platted the townsite in 1871, it was named in honor of the Mexía family legacy.
The Mexia oilfield: The discovery of oil in 1920 led to a population boom and a period of great prosperity for the city.
