Notable 2024–2026 Developments: - Sheffield Farm & Ranch Supply FIRE (Oct 12, 2024): A massive overnight fire destroyed this 70+ year institution at 100 W Main St / Preston St, burning for nearly six hours and requiring four fire departments. Fertilizer stored inside fueled the blaze. Owner Carol Ann Dawley said the future of the business was uncertain. A century-old community anchor lost. - City Comprehensive Plan (2025–2026): Mexia and the EDC launched a 13-month Comprehensive Plan process in August 2025, funded by the Texas GLO Resilient Communities Program. What Mexia is Known For¶
Mexia is known for its history as an oil boomtown and its connection to the Civil War. The city is also known for:
- Its name: The city is named after the Mexía family. In 1833, the state of Coahuila and Texas granted General José Antonio Mexía's children (Enrique and Adelaida) large land tracts in Limestone, Freestone, and Anderson counties. When the Houston and Texas Central Railway platted the townsite in 1871, it was named in honor of the Mexía family legacy.
- The Mexia oilfield: The discovery of oil in 1920 led to a population boom and a period of great prosperity for the city.
- The Confederate Reunion Grounds: The city is home to a state historic site that was once a gathering place for Civil War veterans.
