Juneteenth Celebration

Mexia is home to the longest-running Juneteenth celebration in the nation, held continuously for over 160 years at Booker T. Washington Park (Comanche Crossing) — 291 LCR 377, Mexia, TX 76667. After emancipation, formerly enslaved people in Limestone County purchased this 10-acre site (1898) specifically to hold annual commemorations of June 19, 1865. At its peak the celebration drew over 20,000 visitors. The event is organized by the Limestone County Nineteenth of June Organization. The word "Juneteenth" itself is believed to have originated from this Limestone County tradition. (Texas Monthly covered the revival of the event following a tragic 1981 drowning incident that had suppressed attendance for decades.)
