Traffic & Commute Guide — Waco Metro Area

Waco is a mid-size city and traffic is mild compared to Dallas, Austin, or Houston — but I-35 is the single critical artery and has ongoing major construction through 2026+. This guide covers what commuters need to know.

The Short Version

  • Waco is highly car-dependent — public transit is limited and not a practical daily option for most
  • I-35 is everything — virtually every suburb connects to it; avoid peak hours when possible
  • Active construction on I-35 through downtown (2025–2028+) is causing lane shifts and speed reductions — plan extra time
  • Most suburb-to-downtown commutes are 15–25 minutes off-peak

I-35 — The Main Artery

I-35 bisects Waco north-to-south and is the primary connection between all suburbs and downtown employment.

Active Construction — My35 Waco South Project

TxDOT is fully reconstructing and widening I-35 through Waco. This is an active, multi-year project.

  • Scope: ~3 miles of I-35 mainlanes from South Loop 340 to 12th Street (near Baylor campus)
  • What's happening: Widening from 6 to 8 mainlanes; rebuilding overpasses; new Diverging Diamond Intersection at I-35/Valley Mills Dr; rebuilt frontage roads and ramps
  • Timeline: Began Feb 2025; northbound reconstruction is the active phase in 2026; expected to last until ~2028–2029
  • Traffic impact: Northbound traffic shifted; speed limit reduced to 55 mph in work zone; expect delays during peak hours

Peak Congestion Windows

Direction Peak Time Notes
Southbound (into Waco) 7:30–9:00 AM weekdays Suburbs → downtown/Baylor
Northbound (out of Waco) 4:30–6:30 PM weekdays Downtown → suburbs
Both directions Baylor home game days Add 30–60 min; see below

Heavy truck traffic is constant on I-35 — it is a major freight corridor between Mexico and the Midwest.

Key Road Corridors

Road Role
I-35 Primary N-S spine; connects all suburbs to Waco and onward to Dallas (N) and Austin (S)
US-77 Robinson ↔ downtown Waco; good alternative to I-35 for south-side residents
TX-84 / Lake Shore Dr / Waco Dr Primary E-W connector; runs through central Waco to the lake and west
Bosque Blvd West-side connector; Woodway / Heart of Texas ↔ Baylor area
Valley Mills Dr Major commercial and connector road; Hewitt/Woodway ↔ central Waco
Loop 340 Outer bypass; useful for avoiding downtown when crossing the metro
New Road / Hewitt Dr Hewitt ↔ SW Waco commercial corridor
Highway 6 North toward Hillsboro; connects to DFW via Corsicana

Baylor University Game Day Traffic

Baylor home football games create the worst traffic in the Waco calendar. McLane Stadium sits adjacent to I-35 and downtown.

  • Home game days: Saturdays in September–November (Big 12 schedule)
  • Expect 30–60+ minutes of additional delay on I-35 and surrounding roads before and after games
  • I-35 northbound post-game is especially backed up as fans exit toward DFW
  • Plan around game days: check the Baylor football schedule when scheduling anything downtown on fall Saturdays

Public Transit — Waco Transit System (WTA)

Public transit is available but not a practical primary commute option for most residents. It exists primarily for transit-dependent populations.

  • Coverage: Fixed bus routes serving Waco proper; limited suburban reach
  • Frequency: Most routes run every 30–60 minutes
  • Monthly pass: ~$40
  • Paratransit: Available for riders with disabilities
  • Website: wacotransit.com
  • Verdict: If you live in a suburb (Hewitt, Robinson, Woodway, Lorena), a car is effectively required

Waco Regional Airport (ACT)

  • Address: 100 Karl Klement Place, Waco, TX 76705
  • Distance from downtown: ~7 miles east; ~10–15 min drive
  • Airlines: American Airlines (Eagle); daily connections through Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)
  • Note: Limited routes — for flights beyond DFW connections, most Waco residents drive to DFW or Austin

Regional Drive Times from Waco

Destination Miles Typical Drive Time Route
Dallas / DFW Airport ~100 mi ~1.5 hr I-35 N
Austin ~100 mi ~1.5 hr I-35 S
Temple / Killeen ~35–50 mi ~35–50 min I-35 S
San Antonio ~185 mi ~2.5–3 hr I-35 S
Houston ~195 mi ~3 hr TX-6 S or I-35 → TX-77
Fort Worth ~90 mi ~1.5 hr I-35 N
Hillsboro ~35 mi ~38 min I-35 N
Corsicana ~60 mi ~1 hr I-35 N → TX-31 E

I-35 between Waco and Austin/DFW is heavily trafficked; allow extra time during DFW/Austin rush hours if arriving near end of day.

Tips for New Residents

  1. I-35 construction is active and will remain disruptive through ~2028 — use Loop 340 to bypass downtown when possible
  2. Apple Maps / Google Maps / Waze real-time routing is essential for navigating construction lane shifts
  3. Truck traffic on I-35 is heavy at all hours — maintain distance and stay alert
  4. Game day planning — save the Baylor football schedule in your calendar
  5. Neighborhood roads in Hewitt, Woodway, and Robinson are generally low-traffic and pleasant; most suburban driving is easy once off I-35
